The Vines

A Wonderful Climate Favorable for the Development and Ripening of the Grapes

The Douro Demarcated Region is divided into three sub-regions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior.

Located in the Baixo Corgo, Quinta da Vacaria has a complex and exposed orographic relief with all the conditions favorable for producing excellent quality wines.

Quinta da Vacaria boasts a wonderful climate conducive to grape development and ripening, with sloping, gravelly soil full of chipped stones resulting from the degradation of schist, either due to erosion or human activity. This schist rock benefits both the vegetative and underground parts of the vine, providing a highly permeable subsoil that allows the roots of our vines to seek nourishment and moisture deep below, producing great wines with excellent conservation potential. With 42 hectares, it features numerous vineyard plots, most of which are organized in levels.

In Vinha do Corgo and Vale Bastardo, there are two plots of very old vines with a unique terroir. In Vinha do Corgo, new vines were planted in vertical rows using the “vinha ao alto” technique. On the steeper slopes, with gradients exceeding 30% and 35%, the vines were planted using the “New Terrace Model” technique.

Adjacent to the new winery, we installed a new model of “narrow 1.5 m terraces” in pursuit of sustainable viticulture, achieving greater planting density and reducing the height of the slope associated with the terrace.

Oenology: The Harmony Between History and Modernity

At Quinta da Vacaria, we plan viticulture for the future. Our winemaking strategy focuses on working with grape varieties that are more resilient to current climatic conditions and less susceptible to disease. We are committed to increasingly sustainable viticulture, promoting good agricultural practices that respect the surrounding fauna and flora, seeking harmony between production and the territory.

During the 18th century, Quinta da Vacaria expanded its vineyards and improved its viticulture and winemaking techniques, which were crucial in solidifying the Quinta's reputation as a producer of high-quality Port wines. The Douro region was also demarcated in 1756, making it the first demarcated wine region.
